Research Interests

My research interests lie in the area of human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence, with focus on the design and authoring of intelligent systems for education. I am broadly interested in learning technologies, cognitive science, and education.

Projects

  • Investigate-and-Decide (INDIE), with Chris Riesbeck
INDIE is a domain-independent software toolkit for authoring and delivering web-based interactive learning environments where students can run simulated experiments, analyze test results, form rationales, and construct arguments to support or refute possible hypotheses. It includes a human in the feedback loop to support open-ended learning activities and incremental authoring of the learning environment.
  • The Java Critiquer, with Chris Riesbeck
The Java Critiquer is a web-based critiquing system that helps teachers to detect and critique bad programming choices in student Java code. It provides an open interface for teachers to gradually enter and update critiquing knowledge during real use of the system. This eliminates the need to anticipate and implement all possible critiquing situations up-front.
  • The Stamping Advisor, with Larry Birnbaum
The Stamping Advisor is a system that uses case-based reasoning to provide Ford car designers with useful information during design process, e.g., previous lessons on car components, suggestions on queries to databases and web resources. The system also serves as a template for recording new design cases. Here are two screenshots.
