[Research Statement (pdf)] - [Curriculum Vitae (pdf)]

In a Nutshell
I am a third-year graduate student at Northwestern University in the McCormick School of Engineering in the Electrical Engineering & Computer Science Department . I am pursuing my Ph.D. in the Aqualab under my advisor Fabián Bustamante. I received my Master’s degree in Telecommunications from the University of Maryland, College Park in the spring of 2004. I received my Bachelor of Engineering degree in Telecommunications from Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) in the Dominican Republic in the spring of 2000.
Research

My research interests focus on experimental systems deployment, performance analysis, network protocols and distributed Internet services such as DNS and content distribution networks (CDNs). I am interested in the application and implementation of low-level systems to analyze the performance of underlying protocols and their properties. I am currently working on several research projects that entail evaluating the performance of layered network services from the perspective of individual peers in P2P systems located at the edge of the network. Additional details about my current research can be found here.

Teaching

I've served as a Teaching Assitant for the following courses at Northwestern:

  • Operating Systems (EECS-343), Fall 2010
  • Introduction to Computer Systems (EECS-213), Fall 2010
  • Fundamentals of Computer Programming (EECS-111), Winter 2010

I became part of the Telecommunications Engineering Depatment at Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra as a junior faculty member shortly after graduation (2001) where I was offered the opportunity to lecture as adjunct professor. I later joined the Telecomm department as a full time faculty member upon my return to the Dominican Republic after completing my M.S. (2005). The courses I taught at PUCMM are lsted bellow.

  • Computer Networks I (ITT 421-T), Fall 2005, Fall 2006, Spring 2007
  • Computer Networks II (ITT 428-T), Spring 2006, Fall 2006, Fall 2007, Spring 2008, Summer 2008
  • Data Switching (ITT 427-T), Spring 2006, Summer 2006
  • Laboratory Data Switching (ITT 427-P), Spring 2006, Summer 2006, Summer 2007, Fall 2007, Spring 2008
  • Laboratory Data Transmission (ITT 422-P), Fall 2005, Spring 2006, Fall 2006, Spring 2007
  • Data Transmission (ITT 422-T), Spring 2002
  • Laboratory Digital Communications (ITT 337-P), Fall 2001

While pursuing my MS at UMD, I served as a Teaching Assitant for the following graduate courses:

  • Decision Support Methods for Telecommunication Managers (ENTS-634), Fall 2003
  • Network Planning and Design (ENTS-675), Spring 2004
Research Internships
  • Summer Intern at the Information and Software Systems Research Center
at AT&T Labs Research, Florham Park, NJ, June - August, 2010.
    Collaborator: Walter Willinger
  • Summer Intern at the Internet Research Group
Telefonica I+D, Barcelona, Spain, June - September, 2009.
    Collaborator: Nikolaos Laoutaris
Personal
  • I am originally from the Dominican Republic, the land of eternal summer (ironically I live in Chicago now), beaches, merengue and baseball.
  • I'm a tennis fan (go Nadal!) and I enjoy doing some laps in the pool every once in a while.
  • I enjoy traveling and seeing new locations, my favorite place to live is Washington DC.
  • I am a former Fulbright grantee of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program sponsored by the US Department of State, which gave me the opportunity to pursue my M.S. in the US. Receiving this grant was one of the most educational and enriching experiences of my life.
  • Outside of academia I've worked for serveral years in the industry, I've covered postitions in companies ranging from internet service providers, US goverment agencies, telecomm companies, and even newly created startups. This industry experience while fascinating eventually drove me back to academia.
  • While working at PUCMM I had the chance to meet many interesting people; closely working with the Rochester Institute of Technology, in particular with their Networking and Systems Administration Masters degree program and its faculty was a particularly enriching experience from which lasting friendships emerged.
