Listen-Server vs. Dedicated Server

FlexBot servers can be run in two modes: listen-server mode or dedicated server mode. Several considerations should be made before deciding in which mode to run a FlexBot server.

Dedicated server mode simply runs a server console on the user's machine. The user can enter commands to the system using this console, but cannot participate or directly observe any in-game action from the host machine. Dedicated server mode provides a significant performance advantage over listen-server mode.

Listen-server mode allows the host to be an active participant in the FlexBot game while also acting as the game "host". The Half-Life client runs on the server machine and allows the user to participate and observe the actions of bots and other players. Listen-server mode is a significant drag on system resources and can dramatically slow the game, particularly when a large number of bots are running.

Participating (As a Non-Host) In a FlexBot Game

No special software or downloads are required to participate as a client in a FlexBot game. Any user with the standard Half-Life client can connect to a FlexBot game and participate.

Does FlexBot Run Under Linux?

The current release of FlexBot does not run under Linux. However, a prototype version of FlexBot has been developed that will run under Linux when provided with behaviors that have been specifically compiled for Linux. Look for a Linux release of FlexBot in the near future.
