Home Research CrossJam Classes Toolbox Here's some of the neat and interesting things, software and hardware, I use.Linux
I've been a Linux user since the 0.99 days. Thank heavens there's an alternative to the Microsoft hegemony and the Apple self-immolation.Apache
Apache is only the most popular HTTP server on the Web. I used it for part of my dissertation research and I use it for general page serving.NT Emacs
I couldn't give up Emacs when I started using Windows NT for productivity stuff. Luckily, there's a version of Gnu Emacs for NT. I read both Usenet newsgroups and my electronic mail from within NTEmacs using Gnus.XEmacs
However, when I'm on a real UNIX, usually Linux, I actually prefer to use XEmacsMzScheme
Scheme has been the basis of much of my research and one of my favorite languages for a long time. My favorite implementation is MzScheme from the Rice Programming Language Technology group.Cygnus Windows Tools
Along with NT Emacs, I use Cygnus' Cygwin toolset. This gives me GNU Bash for use with NT Emacs. It's not quite UNIX but it's livable. The Gimp
Okay so I don't use The Gimp, but if I didn't really like Photoshop I would.Chank
Got fonts?
Frontier
I usedto build this Web site. It has some things in common with CrossJam and Argent but in a less formal, researchy style.
It's a cute little tool, but the lack of multi-user access to an ODB seems somewhat problematic to me. If you have multiple Web masters they apparently can't use Frontier on the same site at the same time. Not good.
Also the lack of source bugs me a little bit. I hate not being able to fix stuff that I know I can fix. It's too bad regular schmoes aren't allowed to contribute other than through scripts.
