Slide 47 & 48 of 52

We had to use a low dynamic range shading which doesn't interfere with the edge lines and highlights. By combining tone and undertone techniques into our shading we can strengthen the shape information and maintain the low dynamic range.

One can see how important the role is that edge lines play in distinguishing parts or surface discontinuities. Our shading is tailored to not interfere with edge lines and highlights. As you can see, the shading without the edge lines results in an image which conveys little geometric detail.
