In order to add edge lines and highlights, we could hand-tune the shading algorithm so that the shading doesn't interfere with the black edge lines or the white highlights.

We do this by raising the ambient to make the edge lines stand out from dark regions, and lowering the light intensity to make the highlights stand out from light regions.

However, current shading techniques don't provide shape information in the regions of the object which face away from the light.

For example, details of the curvature of the two small claws is lost. Some details could be brought out by adding multiple lights.

However this causes confusion due to multiple highlights. Illustration techniques are the result of an evolutionary process, practiced for centuries.

Solving the problem by automating the same techniques as technical illustrators, is a good first step.
