In memory of Paul S. Welch

That's me with Grandpa Paul.

(Ok, so I'm not the most creative web designer... But I hope you enjoy reading about my experiences anyway)

That was over a year ago! So what have I been doing since then? I became a "mentor" for Team in Training, participated in the Gulf Coast Half Ironman Triathlon and the New York City Triathlong (which became the NYC duathlon because of pollution in the Hudson caused by a very rainy season) with the Team. I also completed Barb's Race, an all women's half ironman distance tri in Sonoma County, CA. I raised somewhere around $10,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I wanted to run the Chicago Marathon in October, but was forced to take a training vacation and got some physical therapy for injured knees. And i have just joined the Chicago chapter of TNT for the spring season to do St. Anthony's Triathlon in St. Petersburg, FL.

Why I joined Team in Training

I learned about Team in Training through a close friend of mine who has participated in several triathlons with the team. A year later, a friend from college wrote to tell me she had been diagnosed with Lymphoma, the same kind my grandfather was fighting, and that her brother had joined Team in Training. After receiving two more letters, I decided I could do more than just donate to friends. Inspired by the courage and strength of those I know who have fought Lymphoma and Hodgkin's Disease and the honorees I had read about in many fundraising letters, I signed up to participate in the Walt Disney World Triathlon with Team and Training, and set a goal to raise $4000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

My Honorees

In addition to training and support from Team in Training, participants are matched with an honored patient who provides inspiration and a personal connection to the cause. I am especially honored to train for Jenny Hinshaw. She is a friend of mine from the disney team my first season, and continued training with me through Gulf Coast and the NYC tri. Jenny is now training for the 2004 Lake Placid Ironman! Jenny was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in June, 2001, and has been cancer-free since April, 2002. I was surprised to learn that Jenny went into remission in April because we started training for disney in May. Very amazing if you ask me, but she is an amazing woman!

My first season, the Disney team and I trained in honor of Jennifer Nagel. Jen was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in 1998 at the age of 26. She went into remission in 1999 after treatment that included chemotherapy and removal of a tumor on her brain stem. A year later she participated in the San Diego Marathon with Team in Training. Jen had a full relapse in fall 2001. As part of her treatment, Jen went to Milwaukee for an autologous bone marrow transplant: a transplant of her own marrow harvested and frozen during remission. Unfortunately, the transplant didn't work. Fortunately, she is now on an experimental drug and doing much better. Your donation dollars at work!

In addition to Jenny and Jen, I will be participating in honor of friends who have fought Lymphoma and Hodgkin's Disease (Read Teresa's log), and in memory of my grandfather who lost his battle with Lymphoma on February 25, 2000.
