Students who wish to apply Design Competition credits (typically ECE 399)
towards the Computer Science major, have 3 options:
Option One:
Students can use the Design Competition as Unrestricted Technical Electives, subject to
the approval of the student’s CS advisor. A form must be filled out,
available at the Tech Student Services office or at:
http://www.mccormick.northwestern.edu/undergraduate/forms/CSForm96thereafter.pdf
The form must be signed by the student’s CS advisor and by the CS Chair before being
returned to Tech for review.
Option Two:
Students may petition to have the Design Competition count as External Technical
Electives. This can be done by filling out a petition form, available
at the Tech Student Services office or at:
http://www.mccormick.northwestern.edu/undergraduate/forms/CurriculumPetitionForm.pdf
The form must be signed by the student’s CS advisor and by the CS Chair before being
returned to Tech for review by the Tech Curriculum Committee. Students
are encouraged to contact their CS advisors before undertaking
the design competition if they plan to petition for external technical
elective credit. Support of the department may be contingent on the
student generating a strong case that their entry involved significant
software development.
Option Three:
Students may do Design Competition as a Computer Science 399 if, and only if, a
Computer Science faculty member agrees to serve as advisor or
co-advisor. In this case, students will be graded based on thesoftware
they generate for the design competition.
