Earl J. Wagner
PhD Student and Research Associate at the Northwestern University EECS Department. Short Biography Earl J. Wagner's PhD research is focused on Brussell, a system that helps users understand the context of news events. Brussell extracts information from news articles to track situations as they unfold over time. In this work he has been guided by his advisor, Larry Birnbaum from Infolab, and also Ken Forbus of QRG. Brussell itself is a part of the Northwestern KDD project, a collaboration between the two groups that also involves researchers at Cycorp including Michael Witbrock. Through this project, Earl also worked with Larry's other student Jiahui Liu, and Ken's students Dan Halstead and James Baker. Before coming to Northwestern, Earl earned an masters' degree at the MIT Media Lab where he worked with Henry Lieberman as part of the Software Agents Group on the Woodstein project. Woodstein helps users visualize their actions on the web and diagnose problems when something goes wrong. Earl earned his undergraduate degree at UC-Berkeley, majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Philosophy. While there, he worked on the Harmonia Project with Susan Graham. He grew up on the Philadelphia Main Line and attended Lower Merion High School. |
