I'm not a big fan of paper forms, and especially forms where someone has to trek over to some other building to access their information. Seems so 20th century. And I travel a lot, which means that finding me physically is difficult, but finding me via email is vastly easier. So instead of blue forms, we'll use the procedure below.
Send me email at forbus@northwestern.edu and with the set of courses you want to take, or with any question you may have, and we can work it out by email. When we come to an agreement, I will forward it to Jenn Stedillie in the EECS Department and you can pick up your schedule form from her in Room 3-320 (3-322), which is on the third floor of the Ford Engineering and Design Building on the west side of the building. (Just because I don't like paper doesn't mean that others don't need it. And, to be fair, paper does have some important advantages sometimes.)
If you need to talk face to face during advising week, please email my assistant Jenn Stedillie in order to schedule an appointment. And please, if you need to talk to me about issues that are more comfortable for you face to face, don't limit yourself to preregistration week.
Thanks to Ian Horswill for the original version of this FAQ.
What CS courses can I take?
Please check the schedule on the department home page.
What's required for the major?
This information is also available from the department home page.
I'm a Tech student; What should I take for basic engineering?
You have to take CS B11 and a statistics course as part of the major, so those are covered already. If you did engineering first, then it counts for Mechanics also, so you only have to do 5 other basic engineering courses. The most popular basic engineering courses with CS majors seem to be:
ECE B01 (Intro digital logic design)
ECE B05 (Assembly language)
ECE B71 (Applications of electronic devices)
IE C26 (Econ for Engineers)
IE C19 (Operations research)
Important: The basic engineering courses are divided into areas (see the course catalog) and you can't take them all in one area. You either have to take them all from different areas, or else take two from one area and take the rest in different areas. However, CS (i.e. B11), CE (i.e. B01 and B05), and EE (i.e. B71) are all different areas. So if you take CS B11, ECE B01, ECE B05, ECE B71, and a stat course, then you're safe.
I'm a Tech student; Should I have filled out my theme form by now?
Yes. It's also in your best interest. If you don't then they may disallow some theme course that you've already taken, which would be a bummer. Also, they eventually refuse to let you register at all until you fill the form in.
I'm a CAS student, do I need to see you at all?
In a word, no -- unlike Tech, you don't need an advisor's signature at registration time. But again, if you'd like advice, by all means contact me, as per the above.
What do I do once we decide what I'm taking?
Go to Jenn Stedillie in the Ford Engineering Design Center, 2133 Sheridan Road (just South of Tech). She is in Room 3-322. Pick up your completed form from her. If she is not in, please see Olga Rozinskaya in Room 3-324.
